Medications Used in Treating Adolescent Depression or Anxiety

Some adolescents will need antidepressant medication to help them through a major depression. The most commonly used antidepressants are SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It is important that some form of psychotherapy be used in conjunction with any medications. Cognitive-behavioral therapy has proven to be the most effective for adolescents. Family therapy is also an important part of treatment for teens with depression or other mood disorders.

Treatment and Intervention for Teen Depression, Mood Disorders

The first step in assessing your child's mood and mental health status is to contact a local psychologist or psychiatrist who specializes in adolescents.

Did You Know?

2,000-3,000 out of every 100,000 adolescents will have a mood disorder, of which 8-10 will commit suicide? And research shows that depression is occurring at an earlier age than ever before.

Residential Treatment for Adolescent Depression

There are many unique programs available to help teens struggling with depression. From short-term wilderness programs, alternative summer camps, to boarding schools.

Program Spotlight: Aspen Ranch of Utah

This working ranch uses the unique approach known as equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP). EAP uses horses as a tool to promote emotional growth in struggling teenagers.

EAP is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and an equine specialist in which the goal is to generate a positive engagement with the students utilizing an experiential, animal-based modality. Students at Aspen Ranch learn about themselves and others by participating in structured activities with the horses, then processing their feelings, behaviors, and patterns. EAP essentially reveals insights through analogy and metaphor. By relating their experiences with the horses to other people and issues in their lives, our students can begin to examine their negative behaviors and understand how to change them into positive behaviors.
